Formed in the early eighties when hyperrealism and social engagement dominated filmmaking heavily, Dutch underground filmteam Sysyphus counterreacted with a bombardment of short and ultrashort experimental movies, most of which best be described as a wonderful mixture of eccentricity, surrealism, gloominess, absurdism, minimalism and cinematical anarchism.Dutch film critics at the time thought their films were just weird, if not bizarre, and not even worth the celluloid that carried them.Others regarded them as strong representatives of an interesting and promising undercurrent in Dutch filmmaking.Their refreshing approach of nobudget avantgarde filmmaking, combined with the tremendous creative energy they put into every single project they made, makes them hard to overlook for those interested in the subculture of film art.
